This is rather an unusual choice for our book club and we chose to read The Wasp Factory after a flurry of interest in the author’s works that followed the announcement of his death.
There is no denying it is a disturbing cult novel but as a read out of our normal comfort zone we all agreed that we found it a fascinating and strangely enjoyable book.
The Wasp Factory is a modern gothic horror story about a psychopathic teenager living on a remote Scottish island. Written in the first person, the reader is taken into the extraordinary world of Frank and his peculiar rituals, obsessions and past times. A lonely and unconventional sixteen year old, to say the least.
Darkly comic, bizarre and imaginative, The Wasp Factory is the author’s debut novel, written in 1984. Definitely one of the wildest cards in our Den's Dozen. But still scored highly! A surprise for us all.
