Spanning several decades from the Depression years to '60s America, 'Crossing for Safety' follows the friendship of two couples, Sid and Charity Lang, wealthy and seemingly successful, and Larry and Sally Morgan, young academics starting out on married life. 

 

The book beautifully explores their paths in tandem with their evolving friendship and support for each other from newly weds to old age. 

 

There are struggles and difficulties but no major dramas and yet it is totally captivating and engaging. You may find yourself favouring different individuals along the way and switching allegiance as you follow their journeys.  And maybe at some point you won’t like any of the four!

 

The descriptions of the weather and countryside are exquisite. And, don’t be put off by the fact there isn’t a dramatic plot, reading this book is a total pleasure.
