October has teased us with a plethora of exciting book festivals and the opportunity to meet and mingle with book lovers and authors - so RD indulged and listened to your ideas and snooped around to see what is around the corner!

Last month RD took part in the Clapham Book Festival for the first time. We met some wonderful writers including Professor Kate Williams who stole the show with stories about the betrayal of Mary Queen of Scots, signing her recent book Rival Queen. We also caught up with the author Henry Hemmings who shared some of his detective work within his new book Our Man in New York about a MI6 British agent and the propaganda campaign to persuade America to join the war. Hemmings revealed some fascinating 'fake news'!  As Dan Snow remarks it is 'excellent, surprising and timely' so it has to go on the RD pile.

Meanwhile, the publishing world created its own shock waves in October by choosing joint Booker winners. The 2019 Prize was won jointly by Margaret Atwood for The Testaments and Bernadine Evaristo for Girl, Woman, Other.  Evaristo is the first black author to win the Booker and Atwood won after numerous nominations and a previous win for The Blind Assassin. Congratulations to both authors.

And if you are looking to revisit a favourite classic in your book club Penguin has delighted us with the release of their Random House Audio Collection, featuring some great actors who bring the stories back to life!

So lots to look forward as we count down to winter. And dare we say it ... Christmas.

Lots of you are writing your own stories too and we salute you. We made time to attend a new and local author's book launch at Waterstones in Clapham. Menopause - a Hot Topic is the human story of women's experiences of the 'M'-word sourced from over 50 conversations with women by Sam over a cup of Lancashire brew.
